Workers Install Crane in High-Level Waste Facility
Construction crews recently installed a crane inside the Vit Plant's High-Level Waste Facility. Located in one of the facility’s decontamination areas, the crane will support maintenance and repair of other equipment in the area after the facility becomes operational. The crane is the 12th piece of equipment lowered through the roof using the site’s tower crane this year, following previous installations of shield doors and other cranes. Tower cranes are used to hoist and move materials. The team plans to install more than 40 additional pieces this way before finishing the building’s roof.

In southeastern Washington state, Bechtel National, Inc. is designing, constructing, and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). When complete, the Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant, also known as the Vit Plant, will process and stabilize millions of gallons of radioactive and chemical waste currently stored at the Hanford Site.
