Two new teams of Oregon State University engineering students have partnered with the Vit Plant’s Plant Engineering department for their senior capstone projects!
The teams are working alongside plant engineers on challenges and design projects to gain real-world experience. The projects will run through March 2025, culminating with a presentation by each team about their projects and experiences at an end of year event. This year’s teams include:
- Five students from the School of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, working alongside the Water and Steam group on the Melter Cooling Panel Repair Skid project.
- Three students from the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, partnered with the Electrical group on the Replacement Ground Fault Detection System for an Ungrounded System.
Last year’s capstone was a huge success for Amentum at the Vit Plant and the OSU team. The team won the Industry Choice Award for their end of year presentation and two of the students, Corbin Anderson and Michael Acosta, joined Plant Engineering as Rotational Engineers.
What’s a capstone project? A capstone project is a multifaceted academic experience typically required for students during the final year of an academic program. Capstone projects often require students to apply the knowledge and skills acquired throughout their academic careers to solve real world problems. This capstone project is part of a broader partnership between Amentum at the Vit Plant and Oregon State University that helps students gain real-world experience while building a pipeline for potential future employees.
About the Vit Plant
In southeastern Washington state, Bechtel National, Inc. is designing, constructing, and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). When complete, the Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant, also known as the Vit Plant, will process and stabilize millions of gallons of radioactive and chemical waste currently stored at the Hanford Site.
