Bechtel’s long-running support of Second Harvest’s Bite2Go program has crossed the $100,000 milestone, with its latest $10,000 donation helping ensure more local students have food over the weekend so they can arrive at school on Mondays ready to learn.

The Bite2Go program provides children with weekend kits of nonperishable food to ensure they have proper nourishment outside of school. Teachers and school staff identify students in need of the kids, and volunteers deliver them. Each kit includes a variety of easy-to-open, single-serving, nonperishable items—meals, snacks, and drinks—to help close the weekend hunger gap.
Fight Hunger, Fuel Learning
“When kids are hungry, they can’t focus and may become distracted or disruptive. That can affect the entire classroom while they fall behind,” said Brian Hartman, Bechtel Senior Vice President and Project Director at the Hanford Vit Plant. “We’re proud to partner with Second Harvest, the schools, and community organizations to help children learn, grow, and succeed.”
Bechtel’s sponsorships have supported students at:
- Jefferson Elementary, Richland School District
- Washington Elementary, Kennewick School District
- Mark Twain Elementary, Pasco School District
“With one in six kids in the Mid-Columbia facing hunger, we’re incredibly grateful for generous partners like Bechtel, whose longtime support of Bite2Go helps local students get the food they need over the weekends during the school year,” said Second Harvest CEO Jason Clark.
Bechtel and Second Harvest invite others in the Tri-Cities community to step in. Learn more about the program, how it benefits our community’s children, and how to contribute with time, treasure or talents.
Sponsorships such as Bechtel’s help offset the cost of the kits. And more can be done.
“Whether you give now to help bridge the summer hunger gap or follow Bechtel’s lead by raising your hand to adopt a school for next school year, you can be part of the solution,” Clark said.
